Design Thoughts
Reading and reflecting on these videos and articles made me think more about design as a principle. We encounter so much design in our every day lives, but don’t really think about everything that goes into it. I’ve always been interested in the psychology that goes behind the creation of graphic design and advertisements.
DesignBlitz
I completed this assignment while babysitting. Honestly a house with kids is one of the best places to find things with bright. colorful, and unique designs. This took probably 5 minutes of walking around the living room and kitchen to complete. But this assignment did challenge me to think critically about the design that I see around me.
Daily Creates
Event Poster
This was super fun to make for the team, maybe I can re-use it next semester for the actual tournament. I love the picture I used of one of my teammates. We took that picture three years ago at the 2019 fall tournament, and it’s one of the coolest pictures we’ve captured. Also using the UMW colors in the words and background make it all flow together well.
The Color of Words
While this was a fairly easy design project to make, it was still really cool. This class introduced me to the AI art generators, so I find a lot of joy and interest in playing around with those. My word was ‘coral’ and I think it made a very pretty design. I then took a picture of a coral, made it slightly transparent and hid it somewhere in the picture. While being simple, I did have a lot of fun creating this and completing this assignment.
Favorite Movie Quote
This was also a fairly easy assignment, but I really enjoyed getting to create it and share it. I love the movie Ratatouille, so much that I gave a 10 minute presentation about it in my public speaking class 3 years ago. It brings me so much joy to watch it, and to also talk extensively about the nuances in this movie.
Comments and Responses
Here are the posts that I left comments on. I really enjoyed looking through what digital designs my classmates created throughout the week. I noticed how last week and this week I didn’t receive as many comments on my posts as I have in the past weeks. It made me realize how important commenting is and how it creates such a good feeling to receive an uplifting comment on your posts from classmates. With this being a completely digital class, any form of interactions helps to make it feel even more like a class community.

Weekly Summary
Again, I really like the notion of submitting the Posts of the Week form each week. It feels nice to celebrate your classmates for their hard work. Also, can you tell that I figured out how to embed my other blog posts into this? I think it looks a lot better this way when it’s embedded and hyperlinked. Definitely gives this post a much cleaner look. I actually finally picked up on doing that from my other digital class this week, I was commenting on a classmate’s post and noticed that she embedded other links into her. This was a pretty busy week for me with my other classes, so I was very grateful that I finished the bulk of my ds106 assignments on Saturday and Sunday. I think so far, audio week has been my favorite so far. I hope we can work with audio and Audacity more throughout the semester, because I had a lot of fun with that. For graphic design, the website Canva was my best friend this week. I use Canva all the time for projects and creating posters for the club tennis team. For some reason, I waited really long throughout the week to complete the DesignBlitz challenge, which definitely was not that difficult. Uploading the pictures to Flickr and then linking them to a post was probably the most time consuming part of it. But it definitely doesn’t help to wait until the last day to do it either. The PhotoBlitz was definitely more fun to do, in my opinion. But again, graphic design is everywhere in our lives, and this week made me realize how much I encounter every day.
